Alaska Range Brown Bear - April
Game Management Unit 16B, one bear per year! Our hunting area is west of Cook Inlet. We hunt the coastal side of the mountains in the denning areas along the front of the range and the river valleys coming out of the foothills flowing into Cook Inlet. This is an area of high moose predation; about half our bears are killed over bear killed moose.

This hunt is based from my home north of Willow. We utilize the Super Cub on skis to move back and forth to the hunting area just like you would use a truck or horses on a western hunt. The hunting area is about 50 miles west of my home. Unless you choose otherwise you will accompany me in the Cub everyday of your hunt actively participating in the scouting, locating, judging your bear, and setting the spike camp. I have a very efficient operation in the spring. Fuel is delivered to the house. I live on a 2800-foot airport and keep the plane in the back yard. Internet and telephone provide us with reliable weather updates from the NOAA weather reporting stations in my hunting area, and satellite imagery of weather developing. This alone allows for a much better planning and increased safety while flying. Power is available to preheat the plane so we do not lose 2-3 hours each day messing around with these details like we do when we set a spike camp over in the mountains. The accommodations on the hunt are quite nice with the Log Guest house is fully furnished with a real bed, shower at the main house, and constant heat. Trust me after a couple of nights out in April you will be glad to spend the night in a warm bed! Spike tents are Kifaru Teepee's with wood stoves.

Upon locating a bear we wish to pursue we then set a camp and spend the night. Rising early to make the approach to where the bear is and determine if it is the bear you wish to take. The odds of getting the shot are about 50-60% on dens and 90% or better on kills. Our bears are taken either off of their den, about 40%, or off bear killed or winter killed moose, about 60%.

Shots are normally close, less than 100 yards. I suggest .338 Win. Mag. minimum cartridge. Handgun, muzzleloader, and archery hunters need to call so we can discuss equipment.

Grizzly Bear Alaska Range - May
This hunt is in the mountains. Spot and stalk hunting. Snow is melting fast in the high country and the rivers are for the most part open. Days can be in the 60's on a warm year and below freezing on a cold one. Nights can be chilly sometimes into the teens. The best quality binoculars are a must. You will spend hours glassing looking for the right bear, with your guide. Moose and caribou are in the middle of the calving season and the breeding season for the bears is in full swing. This puts the boars on the prowl and all the bears are actively seeking a moose calf dinner. You will camp out the entire hunt in tents; tents may be small backpack style, Kifaru TeePee with wood stoves, or even wall tents depending upon the camp. I can take up to three hunters on this hunt at one time each in their own spike camp hunting one hunter per one guide.

I recommend 30.06 minimum for rifle hunters. As always my suggestion for bullets is a premium controlled expansion heavy bullet. Bonded core or monolithic - Swift A-Frame, Trophy Bonded, Barnes X or triple shocks, Failsafe… Archery, muzzleloader, and handgun hunters need to call and discuss equipment with me prior to booking.

A super hunt to take a monster Grizzly, better 90% success rate with bears averaging 8 feet. We have been seeing an average of 10 bears in 7 days for the last couple years! Jack Tuso took an honest 9'6" boar, 26 2/16" skull, placing this bear #34 in the current B&C record book. Later hunts are dry ground; occasional snowshoe use may be required on all hunts. Early hunts will require snowshoes. Camps are placed with the Super Cub and moved as needed. Hunting is conducted on foot.
