Caribou and Black Bear Combo – August - September
Hunting Caribou and Black Bear is the perfect first trip for a lot of folks. Our Alaska Range area is perfect for these often father/son outings. The Caribou herd we hunt is a resident herd and lives in the hunting area all year this means you do not run the risk of missing the migration. Our bulls move up and down the mountain with the weather. The later you hunt the lower the bulls will be and the whiter the capes. Bulls shed the velvet in the very last couple days of August and into the first couple days of September. By the 5 th of September most all of the bulls are out of velvet. Bulls start to herd up their cows by the end of the first week of September. We take bulls 350 to well over 400 points on the B&C scale.
Black bears are numerous, the State hunting season is open all year and the limit is 3 bears per hunter! We try to take bears over 6 feet square. Very few hunters ever leave our camp without a blackie if they want to take one. It is not uncommon to be able to see 3 or more bears at one time right from the Main Camp runway!
Rifles should be at least .270 or larger although a .308 or even a .243 will work for younger hunters. Premium bullets of heavy controlled expansion are best. I suggest Swift A-Frames, trophy Bonded, Barnes X or Triple Shock, Winchester Failsafe… Caribou are an open country animal and occasionally a long shot is required, that said in going through my records most are taken under 200 yards. Black bears are the same with a lot of the bears killed at 100 yards or less. Archers, Muzzleloader, and handgun hunters need to call and discuss equipment prior to booking.
This is a great hunt offering 10 days hunting from one camp for a great price. Success is normally around 90% and most of the hunters are 100%. (May not be upgraded.)
